After The Storm

By now, you’ve seen the heartbreaking photos and video footage coming out of the areas devastated by Hurricane Harvey. Countless animals have been separated from their beloved families and many, have been left behind in the chaos.

Homeward Pet is working closely with our network of animal welfare organizations to figure out how we can best support emergency responders today, but it will take years for the cities in Texas and Louisiana to rebuild. Both the ASPCA and HSUS have set up emergency shelters in the Houston area. If you would like to help these organizations care for animals displaced by Harvey, you can make a gift at www.aspca.org or www.humanesociety.org.

Joplin’s Sanctuary, a leader in animal emergency rescue, is specifically providing relief to many rural areas in Louisiana. If you would like to help these rural areas, please make a donation at www.joplinssanctuary.com and indicate that the donation is for ‘SW Louisiana Hurricane Relief’ efforts.

Thank you for your generous support to help families and pets affected by Hurricane Harvey.

PBi, while proud of our commitment to all the communities we travel within, we continue to seek ways to help local causes, encourage employee involvement and join with our partners in giving back to this world we all call home. As part of who we are, we believe strongly in giving back into the industries we service and our local community. Haggen Lends a Hand

Across the tracks, on any given day, you’ll likely see Homeward Pet’s dog walkers strolling by the friendly neighborhood Haggen in bright yellow vests with a canine in tow.  This is the same Haggen whose store is always busy and bustling with families, seniors and business professionals looking for a quick lunch option or ingredients for a gourmet meal.

The same Haggen that will draw you in with smells of summertime flowers and Mercury’s coffee, and it is the same Haggen that is touching the lives of animals in need by sharing Homeward Pet’s mission with the Woodinville community.

This last June, Homeward Pet received a call from Haggen sharing that we had been selected as their shelter of choice for a weeklong “Paws for the Cause” campaign. For seven days, every Haggen in Western Washington would raise donations for a local animal shelter of their choosing, and needless to say, we were thrilled to be part of this exciting fundraiser.

June 14 through June 20, Haggen employees encouraged shoppers to give to the animals of Homeward Pet with fierce determination and by the end, more than $4,700 was raised.

Haggen’s Store Manager, Chris, was one of the leading founders of “Paws for the Cause,” back when it launched in Bellingham, several years ago. He was thrilled to introduce it to Woodinville and is more than impressed with its success.

“To be able to raise this amount of money in our first year, I am quite frankly overwhelmed. Animals are something I am passionate about. I feel like I was part of starting this and it’s something we will continue to do every year. I am a dog person, I have a soft spot in my heart for dogs and I want to make sure we continue to help all homeless pets out,” Chris shares.

Not only did the Woodinville Haggen collect the most money out of all participating stores but two of its dedicated cashiers, Denise and France, championed the campaign, raising more than $2,000 for the cats and dogs in our care.

“We have an animal-loving community here. Many customers knew who Homeward Pet was and a lot have gotten their animals from you. We already have people coming back and asking when we will do it again,” France shares.

Denise and France tell us many shoppers donated an upwards of $50 and in general, people just gave. “I always asked customers if they would round up and once they heard the word ‘pet’ they would make a donation,” France says.

As the saying goes, little by little adds up to a lot and we are amazed that our hometown was able to come together and collectively raise more than $4,700 for the homeless animals in our care, all in just seven days.

We are so proud and appreciative to be part of such a generous and passionate community. Thank you to Haggen and to all of our local Homeward Pet supporters who participated in the “Paws for the Cause” campaign.

Be a Hero Every Day

Heed the call and help them all.

Now it is easier than ever to be a hero for homeless animals.

Future veterinarian Tucker, wanted to help our four-legged friends because animals are “playful, cute, really nice and really kind.”

In just a few short minutes, Tucker created his own online birthday fundraiser through Homeward Pet’s Every Day Hero page. Tucker raised an inspiring $527 for the dogs and cats of Homeward Pet and all he had to do was share his fundraising link with family and friends.

If Tucker can do it, you and your family can too.

Be the hero our animals need and get started today!

There are tons of ways to host your own fundraiser, and an Every Day Hero page will help you spread the word! Here are a few ideas:

Lemonade Stand: Everyone loves lemonade! This classic fundraiser is a refreshing way to raise money for the cats and dogs of Homeward Pet.

Neighborhood Car Wash: Car washes are a great way to get a group of young animal lovers together to raise money for Homeward Pet. Put your scrubbing skills to the test while enjoying an afternoon of sunshine!

Host a Party: This is a sure-fire way to collect food and supplies for the animals! Provide your invited guests with our Shelter Essentials list and ask them to bring a donation to the party.

Design Custom Note Cards: Release your inner artist! Have your class make one-of-a-kind masterpieces and turn them into note cards at your local copy center. Tie bundles of 10 together and sell them during parents’ night at school – all for the homeless animals at Homeward Pet!

Organize a Ride-A-Thon at School:Talk to your teachers and administrators at your child’s school about supporting a school wide bicycle fundraiser for the animals of Homeward Pet.  Solicit pledges from family, friends, neighbors and more to donate for every hour you ride.  Parents and teachers can supervise the event as they root the kids on!

Cast Your Vote for Anne!

We are proud to announce our beloved volunteer Anne, is our 2017 nominee for Mud Bay’s Volunteer of Excellence Award! Cast your vote today to help Anne take the win she deserves! If Anne gets the most votes, she and Homeward Pet will each receive $1,000.

“My husband and I have already decided that if I do win, I will donate my $1,000 back to the animals of Homeward Pet,” Anne shares.

For more than 21 years now, Anne has been one of Homeward Pet’s most dedicated and compassionate volunteers. She’s here every Friday morning in her big yellow raincoat, ready to help walk and socialize the dogs.

Anne has done it all at Homeward Pet. She has donated, fostered, volunteered and adopted six of her very own four-legged friends from the shelter. She is one of the many volunteers who have helped Homeward Pet become one of the leading animal-welfare organizations in Washington State and we could not be more thankful for her generous commitment to the animals.

Here are a few quotes and testimonials from staff that speak to the amazing impact Anne has had at Homeward Pet over the last few decades.

“Oh, I just remember one of the first times I met Anne, she was sitting on the floor by the volunteer entrance door, talking quietly, soothing one of our shy small dogs.  She was just so patient and kind.  Just talking away, like to her best friend, which I guess says a lot about how she treats animals!” ~ Joan, Accountant

“Anne has the amazing ability to adapt to the dogs she walks each Friday. When big dogs with tons of energy come through, Anne can easily go stride for stride with them and return them to the shelter with their tongues hanging out of their mouths from exhaustion. The same can be said when a shy or under socialized dog comes in. Anne can often be found in our reading corner with a dog in her lap speaking softly and comforting the dog until they feel safe and relaxed. She embodies animal lover, caretaker, and advocate in every way.” ~ Sheila, Development Manager

“I love that Anne supports HPAC in many ways, including buying tiles for each of her pups.  There is a section of 4 of them together and she has really cute little names and/or stories that go with each one of them and why they have that nickname.  You  should ask her about them.” ~ Karin, Clinic Manager

Cast your vote today for Anne before voting closes on August 6.
