Hawks Day Out

Homeward Pet Volunteer, Kirsten,  gave our available Coon Hound mix, Hawk, a day out of the kennels. Kristen has a fabulous fenced yard that would allow for him to be off leash and free to run and play for a couple of hours.

Kristen shared “he is a wonderful goofy houndy guy.  He was such an easy dog (not great on recall) but tended to venture out and then come back to check in.  Took treats very nicely. Understood that the dog bed was there for him.  Didn’t overly react when the cats came to the back door to look out at him.  Did a good amount of both snuggling and running.”

Leading the Way to the Last Litter

The Last Litter Program accepts healthy litters of kittens and puppies. The mothers are spayed to prevent future unplanned litters, and then returned home. Each litter is cared
for until they are ready to be placed for adoption.

We have all known someone close to us whose cat or dog unexpectedly became pregnant. And while  we all love puppies and kittens, litters can drain time, energy and resources. That was the case for Melinda’s family. When Melinda’s two cats became pregnant, she wanted to make sure all seven kittens received quality care and found loving homes. Melinda reached out to Homeward Pet and benefited from the Last Litter Program.

Homeward Pet provided Melinda’s kittens with vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, microchips and a clean bill of health. The mothers were spayed and safely returned home. We have since found loving families for all of the kittens. Melinda wrote to our shelter manager sharing her experience with the Last Litter Program.

“I took the babies in today and just wanted to tell you that everyone was so kind. I was a mess as I am very attached to the kittens, and this was extremely difficult for me. The staff were all gracious and understanding; they explained everything well and gave me comfort. You have an exceptional organization there and I am so glad you are all part of the Woodinville community.

Thank you for all you do for the wonderful pets that need loving homes.”

If you or someone you know needs assistance caring for an unplanned litter please contact Homeward Pet or learn more at homewardpet.org. You too can make a difference in addressing pet overpopulation and pet homelessness by spreading awareness about the Last Litter Program.

Creative Clinic!

The Homeward Pet clinic staff are always looking for ways to improve the efficiency and accuracy when providing medications to the animals in our care….

The first photo is the team putting a hairball remedy into syringes so the animal care staff can syringe the entire amount into the cats mouths at one time rather than small amounts on their fingers that can take half hour or more to get it all in and it’s messy!

The images on the right are of the contents from a giant bottle of Miralax that needed to be given in less than ¼ tsp doses. The team figured out that by putting the correct measurement into an empty pill capsule would help in reducing spillage, getting it all over themselves and waste.

Way to go TEAM!

Barnaby in Fashion

Barnaby is getting ready for wet weather by borrowing his foster sister’s raincoat.  He’s currently in foster with one of our fantastic volunteers, but this stylish Terrier/Chinese Crested mix is available for adoption.  Read more about Barnaby, and all of our available dogs.

Spike and Dot’s Happy Tail!

“Hello,

We just wanted to give an update on our kittens adopted back in July from Homeward Pet. Sebastian and Button are now Spike and Dot and have settled into our household nicely.

Spike and Dot really like to run around, climb to high places, play with toys and paper, and sleep. Spike likes watching television too. Each has grown a lot, gaining 1.5 to 2 pounds so far. They have visited the vet a couple times, too, just to get checked out and finish their shots for the year.

Attached are some photos to post on the blog or to send on to the foster family that took such good care of them.

Thanks, Homeward Pet! We love the kittens.”  – Tracy

New Dog Intake/Isolation Kennels!

We are excited to announce Homeward Pet’s new dog intake/isolation kennels have arrived, been installed and are already in-use, thanks to the amazing support of our 2016 Fur Ball Auction attendees!

This is a major upgrade for the homeless animals in our care. The new dog intake/isolation kennels have solid stainless steel walls making them easier to clean and disinfect while greatly reducing the likelihood of disease and contagion. The kennels are also more private, giving all of our dogs just arriving to the shelter a place to rest, recover and adjust to their new environment. These kennels could not have come at a better time! It has been less than three weeks and all six kennels are already full of furry residents waiting to find loving homes!

A huge thanks goes out to our supporters and Fur Ball Auction attendees for helping fund this important shelter enhancement.

Below are a few photos of the kennels being installed and in-use!

A Life Beyond Fear!

Some scars remain unseen. They don’t appear on an x-ray. They aren’t hidden under fur. They are much deeper. Some scars form on the inside from years of neglect and abuse. But the damage is just as real, the pain just as great, the mental injuries just as debilitating. The road to rehabilitation can be longer and more difficult than any broken bone.

Jelly Bean is just one success story of more than 1,600 each year that illustrates how far Homeward Pet is able to take an animal’s level of care.

Read the full story of how your support helped Jelly Bean find a patient and loving home to call her own.

Arlo’s Outing!

Homeward Pet Volunteers, Beth and Kim, and available canine, Arlo, headed out of the shelter for an afternoon adventure – a wonderful sight for the staff and behavior team volunteers.

Arlo came to Homeward Pet fearful and not trusting of humans. With daily interactions, training and kennel enrichment exercises, the staff and behavior team have been helping her daily to build confidence and trust. Kim’s huge fenced yard provided Arlo a chance to just run and boy did she!

Both Beth and Kim enjoyed watching Arlo rolling in the grass, coming in for cuddles and just generally acting like a normal dog. Learn more about Arlo here.
